Why We Love This Tutorial:
We’ve made quite a few long knotted necklaces over the years using these mini polished nuggets, but these gorgeous Citrine beads were too striking to go past! So here’s another one 😉 Teamed with Black Onyx and wood beads, we’re loving the mid century modern feel of this necklace. This time we took the time to actually knot between each bead! It is time consuming, but it gives such a lovely feel to the finished necklace. We have used some of our 0.65mm knotting cord (I am obsessed with this cord – it is waxed so it won’t fray and holds the knot super well), but you could also use silk or cotton cord. I’ve knotted between each bead, excluding the wood beads.
Beads and Materials You’ll Need:
- Mini Nugget Gemstone Beads (we’ve used one strand of Citrine)
- 8mm Round Gemstone beads (we’ve used one strand of faceted Black Onyx 8mm beads)
- 6mm round wood beads (one strand)
- Gemstone Pendant (we’ve used a Black Tourmaline Pendant. Our pendants are updated all the time so you may need to swap this out if it’s no longer available!)
- 4mm Tarnish Resistant Wheels (one pack)
- 0.65mm Polyester Micro Macrame Cord (we have used black macrame cord 0.6mm)
- Clamshells
- Clasp of your choice (we’ve used a gold bolt clasp)
Tools You’ll Need:
- Round Nose Pliers
- Flat Nose Pliers
- Scissors
- Sewing Needle
Method:
-
- Start by cutting approx. 2 metres of 0.65mm cord. Attach a clamshell to the end (tie off your knot inside the clamshell, then close the clamshell around the knot. You may also like to add a dob of glue inside the clamshell to make it extra secure).
- Closed clamshell:
- Thread on your beads, knotting between each bead (excluding the wood beads). Knotting technique: Add your first bead, and tie a knot after the bead. I have used the technique of tying a knot around a large-ish sewing needle, pulling the needle close to the bead (as close as possible), then pulling out the needle.
- Pull the knot close to the bead:
- You may also like to use round nose pliers to push the knot as close to the bead as possible after pulling out the needle.
- The pattern is as follows (remember we have not knotted between the wood beads (the holes are a little too large). Insteda we have used a 4mm gold wheel every three wood beads):
- Once you have threaded all of your beads on, finish off with another clamshell (as before). Depending on the style of clasp you have used, you may need to attach a jump ring to the loop on the clamshell to attach your clasp. Because we have used a bolt clasp, the loops on the clamshell are able to connect directly to the loops on the clasp.
- And you’re done!
- Start by cutting approx. 2 metres of 0.65mm cord. Attach a clamshell to the end (tie off your knot inside the clamshell, then close the clamshell around the knot. You may also like to add a dob of glue inside the clamshell to make it extra secure).
