Description
Black Obsidian is a striking volcanic glass formed when lava cools very quickly, giving it a smooth, glossy surface. Although it appears deep black at first glance, when held up to strong light it often reveals a subtle smoky-grey translucency. This natural glass is relatively lightweight compared to many stones. While it is sometimes confused with Black Onyx, the two are quite different. Onyx is a variety of chalcedony, making it a heavier, crystalline quartz that is usually opaque and sometimes banded. Obsidian, on the other hand, is more fragile, glass-like, and formed directly from volcanic activity.
